Lets take a look at Myspace as the most recent model. Once the dominant social network site, with over a 100 million users. It was the site where teenagers around the world filled the pages with unorganised clutter, adverts, music clips and news feeds.
It was so popular in fact, that media mogul Rupert Murdoch bought it in 2005.
Along came Facebook, with its clear streamlined boxes, white background, adverts neatly tucked away in the right hand side of the screen. Whilst Facebook lets its users have relative control over their page, whereas Myspace did a “do it your self” design, they have managed to keep the design so that it appeals to all.
Whilst Myspace continues to loose “valued” customers yearly, Facebook users increased by 50% in 1 year. This tells us something about the crucial element of design.
